Widely regarded as one of Coltrane's most radical and influential recordings, Ascension captures his groundbreaking embrace of the avant-garde and free-jazz movement. Recorded on June 28, 1965, at Rudy Van Gelder's famed Englewood Cliffs studio, the nearly 40-minute large-ensemble performance features an extraordinary lineup including Freddie Hubbard, Pharoah Sanders, Archie Shepp, McCoy Tyner, Jimmy Garrison, and Elvin Jones. Once controversial for its intensity and experimental approach, Ascension is now celebrated as a landmark of modern jazz and a defining statement of artistic innovation.
