The DiMarzio DP153 FRED Pickup is suitable for solid, semi, and hollow body guitars. The Fred started out as a prototype designed to add a little midrange to the PAF Pro. Joe Satriani tried one out and discovered a unique tonal characteristic. Unlike standard humbuckers that fatten up with distortion, the Fred does the opposite. It emphasizes upper midrange and treble harmonics through an overdriven and distorted amp resulting in a tighter and brighter sound. It's been Satriani's bridge pickup of choice ever since, although it works equally well in the neck position.
