This album marked a major creative and commercial breakthrough for Wonder as he gained artistic freedom from Motown, yielding two #1 Billboard hits, "Superstition" and "You Are the Sunshine of My Life," the latter earning him his first Grammy. The album's definitive sound is characterized by Wonder's innovative keyboard work, particularly his influential use of the Hohner clavinet on "Superstition" and the incorporation of synthesizers that added a funky edge to tracks throughout the record.
