Translated from French as “fool the world,” the band’s fourth album captures their restless drive to evolve, recorded across Burbank, Paris, and London with producer Gil Norton. Arguably their most playful release, it blends power pop with space rock and features Black Francis’ eccentric lyrics on UFOs and conspiracy theories. The album includes standout tracks like “Planet of Sound,” “Alec Eiffel,” “Letter to Memphis,” and a flawless cover of The Jesus and Mary Chain’s “Head On.” Released to critical acclaim and supported by a major tour alongside U2, Trompe Le Monde delivered 15 tracks in just 40 minutes and marked the end of the band’s first era before a decade-long hiatus.
